  • Tar coating on sewer pipes (foundries expect this)
  • Light grease/oil residue <1% (previous use)
  • Paint coating (foundries burn off in furnace)
  • Asbestos insulation on sewer pipe <2% (removed during shredding)

  • Stainless steel components (contamination, segregation failure)
  • Mixed steel scrap (ferrous mill scrap contamination)

  • 100% scan of each major piece in lot

XRF Spectrometry

  • Pass: Carbon in range (critical), silicon in range, iron within tolerance, P/S acceptable

Combustion Analysis

Method 3
Purpose
  • Precise carbon measurement (critical for foundry qualification)
Acceptance Criteria
  • Pass: Carbon 2.5–4.0% verified by direct combustion
Procedure
  • Test on samples if carbon near specification boundaries

Magnetic Test

Method 4
Purpose
  • Confirm ferrous material
  • detect stainless steel contamination
Acceptance Criteria
  • Pass: All pieces respond strongly to magnet
  • no dead zones or non-magnetic sections
Procedure
  • Portable magnet test on each major piece

Weight/Density Verification

Method 5
Purpose
  • Verify heavy cast iron authenticity (unbreakable density 1.4–1.6 t/m³)
Acceptance Criteria
  • Pass: Truck scale confirms expected weight for volume
  • density consistent with cast iron

  • Calculate bulk density from truck/load weight and volume
