CRITICAL
Method 1
Purpose
  • Identify ferritic 430 (magnetic) vs. austenitic 304/316 (non-magnetic)
Acceptance Criteria
  • Pass: STRONG magnetic response (ferritic 430 confirmed)
Procedure
  • Handheld magnet on every piece
  • strong pull = 430
  • no pull = austenitic (contamination)

XRF Spectrometry

CRITICAL
Method 2
Purpose
  • Verify Cr 16–18%, Ni <0.75% ( nickel limit), Fe 80–88%
Acceptance Criteria
  • Pass: Cr 16–18%, Ni <0.75% (MUST verify <0.75%), Fe within range

Combustion Analysis

Method 3
Purpose
  • Verify carbon <0.12%, sulfur <0.03%
Acceptance Criteria
  • Pass: C <0.12%, S <0.03%

Nickel Verification

Method 4
Purpose
  • Confirm nickel <0.75% (defines ferritic 430)
Procedure
  • XRF or ICP-AES must explicitly confirm Ni <0.75%
  • if >1.5% = austenitic contamination
